PROVE AND SELL YOUR COMPETENCE
An interview is also an occasion to show one's competence and internal qualities of leadership, knowledge, fast reflexes, confidence and self-assertion. It is an attempt to fill in the vacancy and make one acceptable. It is an art and technique to sale oneself and one's services to the employees. What does a clever salesman do? He tries to persuade the customers that they urgently need the articles of commodities he is selling.

He tries to turn the future or prospective customers into instant buyers. He makes his products seem attractive, economical, necessary and a real value for their money. Similarly, an interviewee tries to convince the employers that he is suitable, competent and therefore indispensable. He tries to arouse the employer's interest in himself and carry conviction with him. He supports his claim by such pieces of evidence as certificates, testimonials, references, work experience, paper qualifications, the charm of his personality and manners. His aim is to have the interviewer's approval and acceptance. He assures them of his performance and latent competence and the skills and abilities in regard to solving problems and achieving definite results. His approach is to condition and hypnotize the employee to believe that he is the best and most suitable person for the job. Thus, in an interview, the employer tries to assess and estimate a candidate's performing latent competence. On the other hand, the candidate tries his best to convince the former of his potentialities for the mentioned profile. It is a conversation and a discussion with the purpose to convince and satisfy each other. The interviewer asks many questions and the interviewee answers them. But the latter can also ask questions in regards to salary, perks, line of promotion, the nature of the job, the establishment etc; It is a very lively, formal and informative meeting cum conversation with a definite purpose to get the job or to appoint a suitable employee. Therefore, an interviewee should also be a competent conversationalist.

The candidate must know the art of conversation. He must be competent to carry the message and meaning across. The candidate should present his candidature in a very methodical shape, sequence and manner. One may be very knowledgeable but it is useless possession unless it can be displayed to one's advantage. No learned and competent person can have appreciation and acknowledgment unless he knows the art of communication. Acceptance and recognition are possible only when you win over others and carry conviction with them through your skills of communication and the art of conversation. This is the practical side of competence and can hardly be overemphasized. Therefore, learn how to talk and converse purposefully. Avail yourself of the opportunity of talking to various kinds of people whenever possible and use if effectively later at the time of interview. A meaningful conversation is always a beneficial exercise.
